Members of the IGU Commission on Political Geography participated in the Regional Conference, held in Istanbul from 17-21 August. The Commission held a business meeting, followed by a social dinner for those who were able to stay. For Commission members, these encounters remain highlights of the Regional Conference and contributed to its success. It was notably a good opportunity to strengthen links with some of the important national committees that were represented, and to extend reach to students… as well as to welcome Istanbul cats to our rooms!
The commission is looking forward to progressing its planned initiatives, including a podcast series based on the success of the Centenary Interviews with distinguished Political Geographers
Another step will be to present sessions at the Paris thematic conference on AI to be held in July 2027 (the call for sessions is open until the end of September):
Sessions organised by joint commissions can be very successful, as we saw in Istanbul with the call issued by the Islands and Political Geography commissions that resulted in a very interesting set of discussions, convened by Takashi Yamazaki & Edward Boyle (C24.27-Islands => Fluid Sovereignties: Geopolitics, Climate Change, and the Future of Island and Maritime Spaces).
For those who are not already members, the way to join is to subscribe to the CPG mailing list, sending an empty email to IGU-CPGjoin@list.uva.nl, with copy to the list’s administrator: v.d.mamadouh@uva.nl , shortly presenting yourself (academic / student / professional, and your institution/ NGO / firm). Then contact the IGU committee of your country to know who is in charge of the national Political Geography commission so that they can include you in their activities.
